Designing with Proper Crown Portions

Peter Salerno: Using the helpful chart below, choose the largest crown for both the ceiling and cabinetry – your client will like what they see and how their properly proportioned room feels.  Start with the ceiling crown.

  • Using multiple pieces in a build-up serves as focal point for hoods and hearths
  • Always do a mock-up corner piece – assembled and finished – to help your client envision how a larger crown enhances the room

  • Crown detail serves the designer well – it can help correct an uneven soffit, and enhance doors, windows, and recessed ceilings
  • Start with ceiling crown first – follow with other crown applications which will always be smaller than ceiling crown
  • Push the envelope – “Don’t be afraid to use larger, bolder crowns!”

Designs by Peter Salerno: The Versitility of Corbels (Part II of II)

Designing solutions from award-wining Master Designer Peter Salerno.  In this part II edition, Peter illustrates many applications for corbels in the kitchen.

1. Corbels can be functional elements for the support of:

  • Wall Cabinets
  • Counter Tops
  • Cooktops
  • Rangehoods
  • Bars
  • Sinks
  • Islands
  • Around Refrigerators

1-D: Under Range Hood
LCD: MLD5868 & MLD5920
RangeHood: MLD5868, RH6084, MLD6024, Corbel: CRV5114

2.  Corbels used for Aesthetic Value:

Corbels not only serve a practical purpose, they also add a tremendous visual value to kitchens, baths, and architectural woodworking.

3.  Proportionality:

A designer needs to be sure that the scale of the corbels complements the size of the cabinet that they are being applied to.  Sometimes designers are intimidated by large corbels and tend to undersize them.  Corbels set the tone for the kitchen or bath.  A larger corbel will bring attention to an island.  In the kitchen, a corbel serves a real function – it holds up a counter top overhang; but at the same time, it makes a statement of style and importance.

The right size is based on the designers’ message.  If the kitchen’s message is “harmony,” the designer can choose a more common size corbel, around 10″ – 15″.  On the other hand, if the designer wants a 9′ island to say, “Look at me!” and make a grand statement, then an 18″ – 30″ corbel will accomplish that goal.

1-E:  Under A Bar
Panel Mould: MLD5928, Corbel: CRV5205, Base Moulding: B469

1-F: Around A Sink
Corbel: CRV5238
Base Moulding: PM8535, B401, PM529

1-G:  On the Corner of an Island
Corbel: CRV5253, Baseboard: B463

1-H:  On sides of Refrigerator
Crown: MLD5848, Frieze: MLD5926
Corbel: CRV5120, Pilaster: CA327

4. Theme – It’s All in the Details:

The corbel size will set the tone of the kitchen.  But what sets the theme of the kitchen is the corbel’s details.  A corbel that has Acanthus Leaves gives a very different feel than one that has a fluted face.  When a designer identifies the client’s preferences – Cherry or Maple, stained or painted, contemporary or traditional – these choices will drive the design process into a direction where the room’s theme will be defined.  When this occurs, the designer can start fitting the room with proper detail, scale and definition.

5. Adding Depth:

Corbels also have different depths.  Shallower corbels have an important aesthetic value.  A corbel that is 1-3/4″  to 3-1/2″ deep can placed on the face of a cabinet or on the front of a pilaster where it makes a design statement that is not overpowering or an obstacle.

Use of Different Sized Corbels on an Island

Island Size Corbel Size
3′  to  5′ wide                                                                   10″  to  12″  High
5′  to  8′ wide                                                                   10″  to 18″   High
8′  to  12′ wide                                                                 18″  to 26″   High
*42″ high island                                                             26″  to 37″  High

Designing with Panel Mouldings

Master Designer Peter Salerno: Looking at the illustrated examples below, notice how easily simple cabinetry can transform into beautiful pieces of furniture.  Panel Mouldings are easy to design with and are extremely versatile.

Panel Mouldings can be applied to:

  • At the base of upper wall cabinets to hide under-cabinet lights
  • Wall cabinets going to counter tops
  • Upper rail of a wall cabinet for crown enhancement
  • Below a counter top, for more detailing and visual weight
  • Below the base doors, for a furniture feel

2-A: Below Wall Cabinet Crown
Crown: MLD5868 with MLD5924
Corners: CRV5097, Panel Moulding: PM495

2-B: Top of Range Hood
Crown: MLD5848
Panel Moulding: MLD5926
Corbel: CRV5114

2-C: Bottom of Cabinet Rail
Crown: MLD5840, Center: CRV5632
Panel Moulding: MLD5979

2-D: Bottom of Wall Cabinet
Crown: MLD5869
Panel Moulding: MLD5956
Corbel: CRV5104

2-E: Bottom of Cabinet (at counter top)
Crown: MLD5840
Panel Moulding: MLD5946

2-F: Below Counter at Doors/Drawers
Panel Moulding under Counter: MLD5978
Cornerpost: CP6244, Feet: FT6266
Drop: CRV5644
Panel Moulding at bottom: MLD5979

An ideal application for Panel Moulding is as a wall cabinet light valance.  The height of this moulding should range between 1-1/4″ to 1-3/4″.  This height allows the designer to hide an under cabinet light (which is normally between 3/4″ to 1-1/2″ height) and at the same time create a beautiful design statement (see #2-D below)

Creating Furniture in the Kitchen

Designing furniture for the kitchen: Master Designer, Peter Salerno addresses two tough elements – pantries and wall ovens – and shows you how to create beautiful furniture.

Decorative Details that Make a Statement:

  • Mouldings
  • Corbels
  • Onlays
  • Capitals, Lineals, Plynths
  • Pilasters
  • Feet
Option #1- Crown: MLD5844, MLD5848  Rosette: CRV5178                         Option #2- Crown: MLD5868, MLD5980
Center: CRV5048,  Parting Strip: MLC6024                                        Rosette: CRV5185   Parting Strip: MLD6024

1. Wall Oven Concepts

Transform a wall oven into a tall furniture piece by using handcarved scrolls and rosettes.  Frame the oven with traditional capitals and large reeded pilasters, or design an open shelf above the wall ovens and pantries to give the cabinet more dimension and interest!

Rosettes

Option #1- Custom Pediment, Crown: MLD5842                  Option #2- Crown: MLD5848, Rosettes: CRV5169

2. Pantry Concepts

A pantry does not have to look like a tall box – it can look like an elegant piece of furniture with great storage capabilities.  Add carved mouldings, decorative onlays, and carved feet to create even greater elegance.  Use shallow corbels – if the corbel over projects, it can become overpowering and disproportional.  Keep corbel depths to under 3″.

Onlays

Pilaster: CA327, Plynth: CRV5149, Baseboard: MLD5974,
MLD1×4.5, MLD6026

3. Capitals, Lineals and Plynths

Capitals, Lineals & Plynths take a large rectangular cabinet and convert it  into an elegant addition to a kitchen.  A pantry or oven cabinet may not be the main focal point of a kitchen, but with the addition of some carved elements, it will support and complete the room’s final design

Option #2 (pic on right) – Crown: MLD5868, Frieze: MLD5902

4. Ornate Friezes

A frieze is used to make a statement; it is bold and sets the theme of the kitchen.  Functionally it bridges the gap from a standard cabinet to a tall ceiling.
