Designing furniture for the kitchen: Master Designer, Peter Salerno addresses two tough elements – pantries and wall ovens – and shows you how to create beautiful furniture.

1. Wall Oven Concepts
Transform a wall oven into a tall furniture piece by using handcarved scrolls and rosettes. Frame the oven with traditional capitals and large reeded pilasters, or design an open shelf above the wall ovens and pantries to give the cabinet more dimension and interest!

2. Pantry Concepts
A pantry does not have to look like a tall box – it can look like an elegant piece of furniture with great storage capabilities. Add carved mouldings, decorative onlays, and carved feet to create even greater elegance. Use shallow corbels – if the corbel over projects, it can become overpowering and disproportional. Keep corbel depths to under 3″.

3. Capitals, Lineals and Plynths
Capitals, Lineals & Plynths take a large rectangular cabinet and convert it into an elegant addition to a kitchen. A pantry or oven cabinet may not be the main focal point of a kitchen, but with the addition of some carved elements, it will support and complete the room’s final design

4. Ornate Friezes
A frieze is used to make a statement; it is bold and sets the theme of the kitchen. Functionally it bridges the gap from a standard cabinet to a tall ceiling.
Corbels and Mouldings

Objective:
To create a functional kitchen with multiple work stations and carry the formality of the home into the new kitchen.
Designer:
Peter Salerno, CMKBD
The first view into the kitchen is the stove area. Therefore, the designer concentrated on making the cabinets and mantel a dramatic piece of furniture. These are the only cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling, so the height gives a feeling of grandeur.
The pot drawers on either side of the commercial stove were designed to look like furniture pieces with acanthus columns.
The mantel is supported by two large carved corbels which flank a scrolled acanthus facia.
The sink area (below right) needed an element to break the straight of the base cabinets. The designer pulled the sink base forward and added a split column on each end of the base cabinet. This gives the wall interest by drawing attention to the sink base and creating depth. Further interest is added over the window by adding similar scrolls and carved corbels as seen in other areas of the kitchen.
As a Master Kitchen designer, Peter Salerno knows how to create one-of-a-kind kitchens. In this particular design, the overall layout gave the homeowners the functionality they craved, as multiple cooks can be working in the kitchen at once. Peter’s material and accessory choices elevated this kitchen to designer status: hand-carved elements, a sophisticated color palate, and a perfect balance between feminine and masculine features.

The following are some basic installation instructions that our manufacturer (White River Hardwoods) suggests:
Installation of Hardwood Mouldings
- Store inside of jobsite, off floor to keep dry.
- Run heater or air conditioner to dehumidify job prior to and during moulding installation and finishing.
- (Remember, concrete slabs and sheetrock mud all add moisture to jobsite.)
- Allow mouldings to acclimate for 3 – 5 days with low heat or air on.
- Adequate blocking is needed to attach crowns to ceilings and wide casing to walls.
- During installation, nail mouldings securely to studs and glue mitered corners. Adhesives can be used where mouldings lie on walls. Miters can receive biscuit-type joinery.
- Central Humidification Systems are highly recommended when extensive millwork is being installed.
