Designing with Panel Mouldings

Master Designer Peter Salerno: Looking at the illustrated examples below, notice how easily simple cabinetry can transform into beautiful pieces of furniture.  Panel Mouldings are easy to design with and are extremely versatile.

Panel Mouldings can be applied to:

  • At the base of upper wall cabinets to hide under-cabinet lights
  • Wall cabinets going to counter tops
  • Upper rail of a wall cabinet for crown enhancement
  • Below a counter top, for more detailing and visual weight
  • Below the base doors, for a furniture feel

An ideal application for Panel Moulding is as a wall cabinet light valance.  The height of this moulding should range between 1-1/4″ to 1-3/4″.  This height allows the designer to hide an under cabinet light (which is normally between 3/4″ to 1-1/2″ height) and at the same time create a beautiful design statement (see #2-D below)
